New Border Economic Zone Approved for Southern Province

Jul. 7 – Authorities have given the go signal to build a border gate economic zone (EZ) located in the southern province of Dong Thap to facilitate trade within the Mekong region.

The EZ is slated to be developed to cater to industrial production, trade, tourism, agriculture, forestry and fishery in a total area of 31,936 hectares. The zone will span the districts of Hong Ngu and Tan Hong including international border gates Thuong Phuoc and Dinh Ba along the Vietnamese-Cambodian border. Continue reading

Biggest Cold Storage Facility in the Region Opens in Ho Chi Minh City

Jun. 22 – The largest cold storage facility in Southeast Asia opened in Ho Chi Minh City last week to provide services to the country’s local and foreign aquaculture and food companies.

The US$28 million facility was built by U.S.-based Preferred Freezer Services as part of its strategic plans to expand into Asia in the next 36 months. Continue reading

Vietnam’s Maritime Economy to Claim Over 50 Percent of GDP by 2020

May 31 – Vietnam plans to place more emphasis its maritime economy over the next 10 years, which it hopes will account for more than 50 percent of its GDP.

“With the support of foreign and local investors, our maritime economy could contribute 53 to 55 percent of GDP by 2020,” said Do Duc Tien, deputy director general of the Vietnam Maritime Association, during the 8th ASEAN Ports and Shipping Exhibition and Conference in Ho Chi Minh City last week. Vietnam, Chinese Province Sign Trade Deals

Apr. 29 – Vietnam signed trade deals with China’s east province of Jiangsu during the China-Vietnam Economic Cooperation Forum held in Nanjing on April 27.

The deals encompass cooperation in industry, trade, investment, finance, and tourism. Trade between Vietnam and Jiangsu Province has grown by 30 percent in the past four years.  On the other hand, bilateral trade between China and Vietnam has also increased by an average of 30 percent in the last decade and trade rose by 40 percent during the first quarter of this year. Longest Cable-Stayed Bridge in Southeast Asia Opens in Vietnam

Photo: VGPApr. 27 – Vietnam inaugurated the longest cable-stayed bridge in the Southeast Asian region on Saturday connecting the Hau River in the Mekong Delta with Can Tho City and Vinh Long Province in southern Vietnam.

The project was completed with the help of a preferential official development assistance for socio-economic development and infrastructure upgrading from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Continue reading

Vietnam to Waive Visa Fees for August and September

Apr. 27 – Vietnam will waive visa fees for foreign visitors to the country from August to September as part of the “Impressive Vietnam Grand Sale 2010” campaign.

Foreign tourists can claim a refund of value added tax when they buy goods during the two month program. Tourist-related businesses in Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City will also offer 10 to 40 percent discount for local and foreign tourists during the campaign.

New Bidding Rules Prioritize Local Companies for State Projects

Apr. 26 – New bidding regulations will favor local contractors and materials for state-sponsored projects and programs.

International tenders for goods and equipment will only be allowed if local bids are not able to meet required standards, if the required materials are unavailable in the country, or if official development assistance (ODA) requires that foreign contractors must be considered according to Directive 494/CT-TTg. Vietnam Requests WTO Panel to Resolve U.S. Anti-Dumping Tax Dispute

Apr. 23 – Vietnam filed its first case to the World Trade Organization’s Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) to establish a panel to resolve  a trade dispute with the United States over anti-dumping tax imposed on its shrimp exports.

Vietnam’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office, Vu Dung, said that Vietnam had taken this action only after careful deliberation and consultation with the United States. “The key issue involved in our request for a panel is the ‘zeroing practice,’ specifically zeroing in periodic reviews under U.S. law. In our view, this issue was decided already by WTO panels and the Appellate Body on many cases,” he said during a meeting with the DSB. Continue reading

Vietnam, United States Trade Hits Record High

Apr. 22 – Bilateral trade between Vietnam and the United States reported a record high during the first quarter of this year compared to recent years.

According to Customs Department statistics, the United States is the country’s biggest consumer worth US$2.84 billion, an increase of 23.2 percent compared to the same period last year. Moreover, American exports made up 19.6 percent of Vietnam’s total imports. Continue reading

Vietnam Begins Construction of US$33.8 Million Road

Apr. 21- Construction of a 550-meter long road section began in Hanoi on Saturday with an expected cost of VND642 billion, or US$33.8 million.

The project is considered the most expensive road to be built in the country, costing more than VND1 billion (US$52,617) per meter and spanning from Cho Dua Gate in Dong Da District to Hoang Cau Street. Continue reading
