Oct. 21 – Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung called for the opening of direct airline and shipping routes to China's Yangpu port to decrease trade costs, during a visit to China's island province of Hainan.

Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung was in China as a guest of Premier Wen Jiabao.

The Yangpu economic development zone is located around 40 kilometers north of its capital, Haikou. The zone has special economic policies and flexible governmental measures used to attract foreign investors.

Vietnam and Hainan island are both close to the Beibu Gulf, but there is no direct airline or shipping route between them. Singapore moderates import and export trade between Vietnam and Hainan.

"Yangpu might become a propeller of Vietnam and Hainan's economic and trade cooperation," Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung told Xinhua.

"I hope the Yangpu port will launch the airline route and shipping route to Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City and Haiphong City as soon as possible, so as to cut Vietnam's trade costs."

Haiphong is located around 100 kilometers from Vietnam's capital of Hanoi and functions as the primary seaport for the northern region.
